中学生の頃、三省堂のNew Crownの教科書で、キング牧師および当時の社会状況についての英文で英語を学んだという方は多いでしょう。現在の中学3年生が使用している教科書なので、学生さんたちも記憶に新しいようですね。
さて、この度の米国オバマ大統領の就任演説には、このフレーズを想起させる部分がありましたね。

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.(U.S.President Barack Obama)

この演説も、今後英語を学ぶためのテキストなどに採用されていくのでしょうね。
奴隷解放運動から始まった南北戦争(1861-1864)、有名なリンカーンのゲティスバークでの演説、
... here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. ...
そして、1950年代からの公民権運動、ケネディ大統領の就任演説等々、大国アメリカの
大きなうねりと底力を感じる大統領の誕生ですね。

やはり今回の大統領誕生は、WASP(White Anglo-Saxon Protestant)ではない大統領であり、年齢的に若いということが最大の特徴のように思います。ケネディは史上初のカトリック系の最年少（43歳）で就任し、オバマは黒人で47歳で就任という共通点がありますね。

オバマ大統領の就任演説の英文を歴史的背景を理解しながら、しっかり読んでみたり、スピーチやプレゼンテーションの視点からは、オバマ大統領の演説のすばらしさを参考にしてまいりましょう。朗読練習をしてみたりしてもよいかもしれませんよ。
そして、なによりもアメリカが不死鳥のように甦ることを祈りましょう。
